Programming Hope About player Gallery Credits Contact Blog Purchase Tickets About the Film A Texas race car driver's big idea may just be the key to averting an employment crisis few see coming. Dan Selec is a pilot, race car driver, and technology expert. He’s also a problem solver on a mission to help stem an employment crisis facing millions of adults with autism. Inspired by his son, Dan was struck with a bold idea – what if he could teach technology to adults on the spectrum? What if they could design video games and use those skills to build a business that could one day employ them? Driven to prove the concept, in three years he’s gone from one student to a team over a hundred strong that are working together and designing a whole new future for themselves and others. Programming Hope is the story of the extraordinary group of people who helped turn a bold idea into reality. It’s an American success story with a hopeful message – about a unique group of game designers who are true game changers. 90 percent of adults on the autism spectrum are unemployed. “Programming Hope” director Jack Creamer says, “I had a personal interest in doing a film about the employment problem facing autistic adults. There are 50,000 people on the spectrum who are becoming adults every year, yet many of them are not able to find or keep a job and they may end up being supported by family or others their entire lives.” “In researching the topic there was really no place I could find that was doing anything to deal with the problem in a substantial way. There were smaller programs here and there – but often they were providing unskilled or unchallenging jobs. Autistic adults are often highly intelligent, yet they may struggle at maintaining employment or at fitting in in a traditional work environment – for a variety of reasons.” “When I found this place [nonPareil] it sort of all came together. It’s incredibly unique. They’re finding ways to utilize these student’s individual talents and skills – rather than putting them in situations that don’t work for people on the spectrum. NPI accommodates and works with their differences rather than ignore or try to change them.” In the News Since their founding in 2008, nonPareil Institute featured in “Programming Hope” has been featured on NBC Nightly News, CNN’s The Next List, NPR, USA Today, Computer World magazine, and Family Circle. The documentary “Programming Hope” chronicles their early progress and their journey from small non-profit to a recognized leader in employment solutions for autistic adults. Current Statistics on Autism On March 27, 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new data on the prevalence of autism in the United States. This surveillance study identified 1 in 68 children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls) as having autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
